There are many good reasons for having a mobile broadband solution handy, whether you’re planning to use it for work or play. Free public Wi-Fi in many cafes and restaurants is useful, but the connections are often quite slow, which can cause more frustration than not having a connection to begin with. So, a dedicated mobile broadband connection that’s just for you is the way to go.
There are two types of solutions to choose from, explained below.
The most easily accessible solution for many, chances are you already have everything you need to do it. All you’ll need is a smartphone with a mobile data plan, and an internet-capable device, like a tablet or a laptop. The name refers to your smartphone’s connection, which is ‘tethered’ to another device. Essentially, your phone functions as your wireless hotspot.
So it’s easy to set up and use, but there are a few drawbacks to tethering. First, most mobile data plans included with smartphones are designed only for mobile browsing activities, which require a smaller amount of data. Tethering can use up a modest data allowance much faster than regular phone use. Tethering also tends to drain a phone’s battery, which can be a problem when you’re on the go.
Ultimately, tethering is not a permanent solution unless you’re planning to invest in a sizeable data plan for your phone. But, in a pinch, it’s a great asset.
Mobile Broadband Device
A dedicated mobile broadband device, like this one from Telstra, removes many of issues associated with tethering, like using up a data plan, and draining your phone’s battery. There is an upfront cost associated with purchasing the device, but once you have it, you’re able to buy prepaid data packs, meaning there’s no ongoing cost if you don’t need to use the device from month to month.
Plus, the device fits easily in a pocket or purse, and can provide wireless internet to multiple devices. That makes it perfect for the whole family to share!
