Spring is in the air and that means it’s time for spring cleaning. There’s something satisfying about clearing out some of the junk that you’ve accumulated throughout the past year. A good spruce up at this time of the year is also important if you have any allergy sufferers in the house as cleaning up dust and other irritants will reduce seasonal symptoms. While you probably have your annual top-to-bottom house clean down pat, here are some extra hints you might find helpful to add to your routine.
Start with a list
While it seems funny that this list starts with a list, that shouldn’t make this tip any less helpful. Rather than getting straight into it and heading for the first messy pile or stain that you see, begin your spring cleaning by carefully going through each room of the house and making a checklist of everything that you think needs to be done. This way you can be confident at the end that you’ve done a thorough job. Creating a list will also give you a better idea of how long the whole process will take – you might be surprised to find, for example, that you’ll need to set aside more than one weekend.
Make it fun
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore: make it enjoyable by turning up some music, preparing some snacks and inviting friends, family and neighbours to join in (with the offer to help them in return, of course!)
Remember the forgettable
It can be easy to overlook these out-of-the-way items, which is all the more reason to put them on your list:
- Light bulbs
- Vertical blinds
- Under large pieces of furniture
- Fan blades
- Refrigerator coils
Be a giver not a tosser
Go through your wardrobe and clear out anything that you can’t even recall wearing in the last year. If you find it difficult to let go of clothes, choosing to donate rather than toss them might make this exercise easier for you; motivate yourself by remembering that you’re contributing to a good cause. The same with canned food you’ve had in your pantry for months and months: put them in a box for your local food rescue service.
Almost at the finish line
After making everything spick and span, there’s just one more bit of work to be done. So that all your spring cleaning effort doesn’t go to waste, safeguard surfaces and furniture (and make your next cleaning job that much easier!) by applying protective products to them. Stock up on new cleaning products on your next shopping trip so you’re well-equipped for touch ups.
